Among the unmissable and magical places of Palermo we cannot fail to mention the Monte Pellegrino Oriented Nature Reserve, one of the most important reserves in the region which is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. About 600 meters high, the carbonate massif has plain areas, steep sides and many caves of marine or karst origin (about 130).
Among the most famous, it is almost an obligation for us to mention the Gendarme cave of karst nature which houses an underground lake and the Cuoco cave which houses an ancient underground oil mill.
The Monte Pellegrino Nature Reserve also offers the opportunity to admire wildlife, in fact you can find examples of peregrine falcons, golden eagles, owls, foxes, stone martens and wild rabbits.
Monte Pellegrino has a long history, a sacred place that has hosted numerous sanctuaries and places of worship. The most important is the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, which is located on the summit of the mountain. The sanctuary is dedicated to the patron saint of Palermo, and houses the saint's remains.
The reserve was established in 1996, and covers an area of 1,050 hectares. It is divided into two zones: zone A, which includes the entire Monte Pellegrino massif and the Bosco Niscemi, and zone B, which includes the Real Tenuta della Favorita with Piano Landolina.
The Monte Pellegrino Oriented Nature Reserve is a unique place, which offers a combination of nature, history and culture. It is an unmissable stop for anyone visiting Palermo.
