The current best place in the nautical, architectural and recreational area of Palermo, "A Cala" in Sicilian, dates back to a long time before what you might think, in fact it is considered the oldest port in Palermo.
It was actually discovered by the Phoenicians, for the first time, who transformed it into a loading port given that the natural inlet reached deep into the hinterland.
The Romans expanded it and made it safer, but in the Middle Ages it became one of the most important commercial and maritime centres, the arrival and departure point of ships coming from all over the Mediterranean.
In the 16th century the new commercial port was built in the north of Cala, the old port lost its commercial importance while remaining a point of military and civil activities.
Today, La Cala is a lively and bustling place. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals. The harbor is full of fishing boats, pleasure boats and yachts.
It is possible to take a boat tour to admire the city from another perspective, walk along the well-kept seafront which offers a wonderful panoramic view, enjoy the warm Sicilian sun's rays on the very central and small, but evocative Cala beach.
La Cala is an unmissable destination for anyone visiting Palermo. It is a fascinating place that offers something for everyone.
