The Isola delle Femmine is a small islet located in the bay of Carini, a few kilometers from Palermo. It is a very popular tourist destination, thanks to its natural beauty and rich history. The island is about 1.5 kilometers long and about 300 meters wide. It is characterized by a rocky coast, with caves and inlets and by lush Mediterranean vegetation. The history of the Isola delle Femmine is linked to that of Sicily. It has been inhabited since ancient times, and has had a succession of dominations, including those of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and French. Legend has it that the island was discovered by thirteen Turkish girls, who were boarded on a ship at the mercy of winds and waves, after wandering for days following a storm they were shipwrecked on the islet. Once the families were reunited, they decided not to return to their homeland and founded a city which in honor of the peace sought they called "Capaci" from "Cca-paci" or: here peace, the more modern society then contributed to defacing the name with events known to all that drastically distanced themselves from what was the most primitive meaning of the name. In the medieval period, the Isola delle Femmine was an important fishing and trading centre. In the 16th century, it was fortified by the Bourbons to defend it from the incursions of Saracen pirates. In the 19th century, the island became a tourist destination for the Sicilian aristocracy. It was in this period that numerous villas and summer residences were built, which can still be seen today. Today, Isola delle Femmine is a very popular tourist destination.
